Geostatistical 3-dimensional integration of measurements of soil magnetic susceptibility.
2010
In soil magnetometry, two types of measurements are usually performed. The first type is measurements performed on the soil surface, frequently using an MS2D sensor. The second type includes measurements of magnetic susceptibility carried out in the soil profile, usually to a depth of about 30 cm. Up to now, such measurement results were analyzed separately. However, it is possible and advantageous to integrate these two types of measurements. The goal of the study was to integrate measurements of magnetic susceptibility performed on the soil surface and in the soil profile. More specifically, the goal was to obtain 3-dimensional spatial distributions of magnetic susceptibility of the topso…
Arsenic Pollution in the Southwest of Tuscany: Monitoring of Cornia Catchment Basin
2006
The territory of Colline Metallifere, in SW Tuscany, is characterized by the presence of strong arsenic anomalies. Some hypotheses, formulated in the last 20 years, based on geological and mineralogical factors have failed to explain the peculiar distribution of this toxic element in soil, fluvial sediments and ground water. Our research group has been studying for four years the problem of arsenic pollution in this district to investigate the origin and the mechanism of As diffusion in the environment. In particular we started a comparative study based on the extensive sampling of the stream sediments of the main waterways of Colline Metallifere (Pecora, Bruna and Cornia and their tributar…
The influence of industrial emissions of zinc plant on the properties of chernozem soil.
2018
East Kazakhstan is a storehouse of ore raw materials. Here the main ore-mining industrial objects are concentrated. Most of these deposits and ore deposits are characterized by polymetallic and substantially lead-zinc ore composition. When developing ore deposits, the soil-vegetation cover of the territories is disturbed, and sometimes their complete destruction occurs. On the investigated object leached and podzolized chernozems are widespread. The study of the soil cover at the territories adjacent to the zinc plant showed a negative impact of the plant's emissions on the soil and vegetation cover. Thus, where there is a major outflow from the wind rose, there are manifestations of deep e…
Geostatistical Microscale Study of Magnetic Susceptibility in Soil Profile and Magnetic Indicators of Potential Soil Pollution
2015
Directional variograms, along the soil profile, can be useful and precise tool that can be used to increase the precision of the assessment of soil pollution. The detail analysis of spatial variability in the soil profile can be also an important part of the standardization of soil magnetometry as a screening method for an assessment of soil pollution related to the dust deposition. The goal of this study was to investigate the correlation between basic parameters of spatial correlations of magnetic susceptibility in the soil profile, such as a range of correlation and a sill, and selected magnetometric indicators of soil pollution. Magnetic indicators were an area under the curve of magnet…
Resistance of solonetzic soils to rocket and space activity impact in central Kazakhstan.
2018
Introduction. This paper provides the results of a comparative analysis of physicochemical and biological characteristics of soil cover at the fall places of the first stage of “Proton" Launch vehicle (LV) in the area of Yu-2 (Central Kazakhstan). In particular, we considered the ecological stability of brown solonetzic soils in combination with Solonetz soil, to chemical pollution and variability of soil microflora to mechanical stresses during the fall of the separated parts of space launch vehicles (SLV SP). Materials and Methods. We have chosen those Kazakhstan's territories that are used by the Baikonur Cosmodrome as an impact areas of separating parts of space launch vehicles (SLV SP …
The Utility of Ground Bryophytes in the Assessment of Soil Condition in Heavy Metal-Polluted Grasslands
2022
Bryophytes are commonly used in biomonitoring heavy metal pollution, whereas the bioindicative value of bryophyte communities is a less known issue. The aim of the present study is to recognize the utility of the bryophyte community’s structure in the assessment of soil condition in heavy metal-polluted, dry grasslands. The study plots are examined with respect to bryophytes; vascular plants; concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As in the soil; total nitrogen and organic carbon content in the soil; and soil pH. The results show that both bryophyte species richness and composition greatly depend on soil chemical characteristics, including heavy-metal pollution levels and soil pH. Three groups o…
